In the case of shallow and/or low temperature wells an accelerator added to the slurry will do exactly as its name suggests to the thickening time / set time. When cementing surface pipe, economics dictate that excessive WOC time is undesirable, accelerators being used to allow drilling operations to go ahead as soon as possible.
