Certain materials used to modify the properties of cement slurries are known to cause foaming and/or air entrainment. The resulting inaccuracies in slurry density measurements may cause the operator to reduce the water content in order to raise the surface density to the specified value. A severely reduced pumping time may be the end result, especially if retarders and other additives are premixed in the water. Antifoams are added to the slurry and act to prevent the air being entrained, defoamers are generally used as required to cure a foaming problem.
