Oilwell cements mixed with the recommended amount of water generally yield slurries with a density in excess of 15 lbs/gal. Many formations cannot stand the weight of columns of slurry at that density; consequently additives are used to allow the slurry to be mixed at lower densities. Another consideration is economic; water is significantly cheaper than cement, so use of a material that will increase the water requirement of the slurry can show significant cost savings. In this case, the material must not only increase the water requirement, it must also prevent solids settling in the slurry.
