Friction reducers used in acid fracturing generally act to change a fluids properties from those of a Newtonian fluid, where the viscosity remains constant at all shear rates, to a non-Newtonian, where the viscosity changes with the shear rate. These products allow pumping of fluids at a higher rate whilst still keeping the surface pressures at manageable levels. This also minimises the hydraulic horsepower necessary to maintain the higher rate.
