Mutual solvents are liquids which to a significant degree are soluble in both oil and water. Their main benefits are in minimising the adsorbtion of oil-wetting surfactants on the formation; reducing interfacial tension between oil and water; providing a detergent action on the formation and acting synergistically with some surfactants.
